The need for a clean colon is paramount to performing
a successful colorectal diagonostic procedure. Bowel
lavage refers to the clensing of the colon which is
needed in preparation for colorectal screening. Klean-Prep
is a balanced mixture of polyethylene glycol and electrolytes,
when added to water, produces a clear colourless iso-osmotic
solution. Klean-Prep acts as a bowel clensing agent,
removing all solid material from the colon presenting
the surgeon with unobstructed images of the colon mucosa
needed for the diagnostic procedure.
Colorectal screening is accomplished by physical and
X-ray examination and by a process called colonoscopy.
The colonoscopy procedure is performed by inserting
a flexible tube into the colon with a light source to
allow the physician to visualize the colon walls. If
polyps (benign wart-like growths) are detected, they
can be removed with little or no discomfort to the patient.
The simplicity of the examination and the significant
cure rate from early detection, has resulted in a growing
number of colonoscopies being performed each year.
Colorectal cancers are the second highest cause of cancer
deaths in North America. It affects both men and women
and is most prevalent in individuals over the age of
50. Early detection diagnostic screening tests can facilitate
the removal of benign polyps before they develop into
cancer. This translates into a survival rate of greater
than 90% for patients suffering from pre-cancerous colorectal
polyps.
